The Senate Standing Committee held a ceremony in Pakistan. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) officials were also invited to the event, where PTA officials gave briefing regarding 5G. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) clarified to Senate committee asking for 2 more months to present full plan of 5G in Pakistan. PTA said It will take 4-5 years to start 5G service in Pakistan.
The PTA member said that the advertisement given by Zong regarding 5G is also discontinued. On which committee member Senator Ateeq Sheikh said that PTA was also supporting Zong. Because, how a company was allowed to claim that they are number one. Member PTA said it had taken legal action regarding the advertisement. A policy on 5G technology was provided by PTA in 2017. However, in June they created the 5G framework. Let me tell you, Zong claimed that they had first tested 5G speed successfully in Pakistan.
They said Zong and other operators contacted us, which allowed them. However, Zong was allowed to test for 3 months, not on a commercial basis. In addition, Mobilink and Warid also sought permission. PTA officials say that 5G has not yet come to a commercial level in Pakistan and Zong is not authorized. Zong tested the site, did not test the network. That is why 5G network tests have been blocked from advertising. They said the PTA issued a notice to Zong on the wrong advertisement

To which the PTA member said that if there was a violation of the Act or the framework then we are responsible for it. A PTA representative said that there are a number of challenges for 5G technology in Pakistan. The issue of spectrum availability and spectrum cost is yet to be fixed. In addition, the impact on infrastructure, security, applications, rights of views and human health is still to be seen.
PTA officials said that PTA was working on 5G is not yet complete. Trial or operation is not a mandate of PTA, Operators around the world prepare themselves. He said that from October 2017 all operators were preparing for the 5G test. Telenor, PTCL, Mobilink, and SCO also requested the trial. Director-General Licensing said on the occasion that Wi-Tribe had applied for 5G which was tested together with Zong. PTA representative said Wi-Tribe provided a spectrum to Zong on which the trial took place.
They said that PTA is not currently ready for launching 5G technology in Pakistan. Therefore, 5G technology will be operational by the end of 2021. In fact, Zong has taken the lead in the 5G test and no other company was ready. Representative PTA said that 5G would be standardized in 2021 or 2022. Senator Shahzad Waseem said that auction of the 5G spectrum should be made transparent. The timeframe for auction and other matters should come to the fore.
Member PTA made it clear that providing 5G services in Pakistan requires another 4-5 years. However, in order to present a complete plan in this regard, asked for 2 more months from the Senate Standing Committee.
